Your Fall Market Update: New Highs, Higher Rates, and a Busy Home Stretch
Greetings from all of us at Integrity! Fall has arrived, bringing cooler mornings, football weekends, and the annual mystery of how the holidays are already approaching. Before calendars fill with family gatherings and travel plans, we want to share a few market highlights and some things worth considering before year-end.
The third quarter gave investors plenty to think about. Interest rates climbed, energy prices increased, and the Federal Reserve raised rates in September. November’s midterm elections are also approaching, bringing more attention to taxes, government spending, and the direction of the economy.
If you have wondered how encouraging account balances can coexist with discouraging headlines, you are in good company. Markets weigh many developments at once, and the news that gets the most attention is not always what drives investment returns. While challenges remain, growing businesses and healthy profits can give investors reasons to remain optimistic.
Our focus is on understanding these developments and keeping your financial decisions connected to your goals. Football season is underway, and it is worth remembering that a good team adjusts as the game unfolds without abandoning its game plan after every play. We believe the same balance of preparation, patience, and flexibility serves investors well.
The Quarter at a Glance
Here is how several major markets performed through September 30:

| Investment category | Third-quarter return | Year-to-date return |
| U.S. large-company stocks — S&P 500 | 2.3% | 12.7% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 2.6% | 16.1% |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | -2.3% | 7.2% |
| Developed international stocks — MSCI EAFE Index | 0.9% | 10.8% |
| Emerging-market stocks — MSCI Emerging Markets Index | -0.2% | 23.7% |
| U.S. investment-grade bonds — Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index | -3.5% | -2.9% |
These returns represent broad market benchmarks. Your portfolio’s results will vary based on your investments, their allocation, and applicable fees.
Bonds: A Difficult Quarter with a Brighter Side
Bonds are often expected to be the quieter part of a portfolio. This quarter, they had a little more to say.
When interest rates rise, newly issued bonds generally offer higher interest payments. Existing bonds paying lower rates become less attractive, which pushes their market prices down. That relationship explains much of the quarter’s difficulty for bond investors.
The brighter side is that new bond purchases can provide more income. As bonds mature or interest payments are reinvested, investors may benefit from those higher yields.

This does not mean every bond investment will recover quickly or that higher yields eliminate risk. It means we should consider both current price changes and the income an investment may provide over time.
The Federal Reserve’s September rate increase was also a reminder that the path of interest rates can change. Higher energy prices have added to inflation concerns, and future decisions will depend on how the economy develops. Our starting point remains the role bonds serve in your plan, including income, diversification, and funding future expenses.
Stocks Are Near Record Highs. Is the Air Getting Thin?
New highs can bring two reactions, sometimes within the same minute: “This is great!” and “Should I be worried?” It is natural to wonder whether a decline is coming, particularly when the headlines seem less encouraging than your account statement.
A record high alone does not tell us when the next decline will happen. Markets can continue advancing, and pullbacks can arrive even when the economic news looks healthy. Much like a strong first half, recent gains are encouraging, but there is still plenty of football left to play.
The question is whether your portfolio’s balance of growth potential and risk remains appropriate for your goals. After strong gains, stocks may represent a larger share of your investments than intended.
Your timeline matters just as much. Money needed for an upcoming expense deserves different consideration from money invested for goals many years away. That distinction can help us prepare for market fluctuations without trying to predict them.
As your financial quarterback, our role here at Integrity is to keep the full field in view. We are considering your goals and timelines to ensure a holistic approach. That includes reviewing your investment mix and rebalancing when appropriate to keep it aligned with your plan.
The Election: Plenty of Opinions, No Crystal Ball
November’s midterm elections will put taxes, government spending, and the economy front and center. We can safely expect one thing: no shortage of commentary.
These issues matter. Specific policy changes can affect households and businesses, and they may create reasons to adjust parts of a financial plan.
However, predicting an election result and predicting the market’s response are two separate challenges. Company profits, consumer spending, interest rates, and global events will continue to influence investment returns after the campaign signs come down.
Our approach is to evaluate policy changes as their details become clear and consider how they apply to your circumstances. A change affecting your taxes or retirement strategy may deserve action. Political predictions offer a much less dependable foundation for investment decisions.
A Short Checklist Before the Holiday Checklist
Year-end planning is easier when it is not competing with a last-minute gift run. Before the season gets busy, please let us know if any of these items are on your list:
- Retirement withdrawals: Confirm any required distributions from your accounts outside of Integrity. We review all client RMD’s when they are held here with us.
- Charitable giving: Discuss planned gifts before making them so we can consider the available options.
- Tax planning: Review potential opportunities with us and your tax professional while there is still time to act.
- Life changes: Update us on a new retirement date, major expense, change in income, or new family responsibility. Anything that may affect your needs and expectations for your investment accounts
You do not need to arrive with a finished spreadsheet or even an organized question. An early conversation gives us more time to help.
Thank you for the trust you place in Integrity. We hope the months ahead bring time with family, beautiful fall afternoons, and more touchdowns than penalties for your favorite team. As we enter the fourth quarter of the year, please call or email us with questions so we have time to work through your year-end planning together.
